Story of the Week

May 6, 2002

This week, we have a story written by Rosalind Rees, from Toronto, Ontario. Rosalind was born and raised in Newfoundland where she was employed in the fishing industry for over 20 years. The position she held there was packaging and cleaning fillets. In 1992, the fishery closed. As that time, Rosalind retrained as a Personal Care Worker. Since coming to Ontario, Rosalind has found she needs to upgrade her skills to continue work in the Personal Care field. She has been attending classes at East End Literacy to prepare for the Personal Support Worker program at a nearby college.

One Particular Day

by Rosalind Rees

I like an early morning rise in the morning. I can have my shower, and listen to the TV. I can walk out of my home, and see all the traffic moving on a very sunny morning. I like to see people walking on the street trying to get to their to their jobs or other places they like and do errands they have to attend to. I like having a good outlook on life. This would make a perfect start to my day.

I attend my class at East End Literacy. I am aiming for a higher level of education. I feel good when I can learn and be with other students. We share ideas and have different points of view. I have an interest in learning the computer. My spirits are to the highest peak when I know I am getting more knowledge and understanding about learning and listening. We read newspaper clippings and have discussions about different points and headlines. I like to see all the students attending and doing their own individual work assignments. We have an amazing and patient teacher, I feel a great sense of encouragement and feel I am achieving my goals. A morning like this is just perfect for me.

When my class is finished, I go home, have lunch, get a change of clothing and go to the park. I like sitting and relaxing my mind and I like meditation. The children play and enjoy themselves. I love to hear the birds singing, and see the squirrels running about looking for food. I like admiring the beautiful flowers. I like to watch young kids playing and enjoying the sun and the mothers of kids just sitting and reading a book. I always meet someone who wants to have a conversation. I think this is great!

In the evening, I enjoy having a good supper and going for a walk with my friend on a nice moonlit night. We drop in to a coffee shop and and have a coffee. We always meet friendly people. I think walking is great exercise. Later in the evening, I do my homework. I enjoy reading "Surprises", writing and sometimes math. I listen to the news and like to hear county and western music. Then I get dressed for bed and thank God for his blessings. The Spirit that lives within my heart and soul can overcome all obstacles of life. A day like this one particular day fits me perfect!
