The following story was written by Garnet Ross, from Lac Seul First Nation, Ontario. Garnet attends the Lake of the Woods Adult Learning Line in Kenora, Ontario and enrolled in online courses with Good Learning Anywhere (GLA). GLA is affiliated with the Sioux-Hudson Literacy Council in Sioux Lookout, northern Ontario. Garnet won the 2012 Lois Land Award for Achievement.
Garnet had not used computers very much and was very nervous. Since starting with GLA, he has attended over 400 hours of online classes. Garnet is always ready to share from his experiences, especially in their Self-management/Self-direction classes. He has inspired many with his determination to make some positive changes in his own life and by overcoming many challenges; he’s returned to school, quit drinking and attends church. Garnet was diagnosed with cancer last year and in the face of this newest challenge, he shared the following story.
I kept on going through all the chemo and other challenges ahead of me. So everyone, just keep on going – it’s the only way to finish your goals. Don’t stop no matter what roadblocks are ahead of you. People are out there to help you, and they are willing to do so. They helped me. I want to help people now too. No matter who needs help I want to be there for them.
