Story of the Week

April 2, 2001

This week, we are posting a mother and a daughter's stories, from Prince George, British Columbia - Journey of a Mother & Daughter. There are two parts to each of their touching stories. Read on...

Tepanga is a 12-year old girl and is in Grade 7. She enjoys school and has been a member of her school choir. She enjoys music, dancing and swimming. She is proud to be able to tell her story and hopes it will encourage other young girls to write about their experiences.

A Daughter's Perspective

by Tepanga

My name is Tepanga and I am 12 years old. I was five years old when I found out my mom was using drugs. My brother and I were cleaning the house and we found a needle under the fridge. My home life was scary. I didn't know what was going on because I was so little. All these strangers would come over to our house. They would go into my parents' bedroom and come out looking weird. My older brother was twelve then and he looked after me. One time this guy overdosed in our bathroom. I was scared because someone told me it was my mom. One day the cops showed up at our house with a social worker. The social worker took me and my brother to a foster home. I can remember I missed my mom and dad. I was really scared and nervous. I thought I'd be taken away from my brother. I had to sleep in the same bed as him because I was afraid when I woke up in the morning he'd be gone.
