Story of the Week

July 2, 2001

The following poem was written by Bill Stephenson, from Hamilton, Ontario. Bill's hobbies and interest are hiking, camping, fishing and travelling. He likes to be Santa Claus for 6-7 weeks at the end of the year. He has been playing the jolly old man for 30 years. Bill started writing poems about a year ago. He attends the Literacy and Basic Skills program at Mohawk College when he's not playing Santa Claus. When he started L.B.S. in 1975, he couldn't read or write at all. He has learned a lot in the last 25 years.

Summer

by Bill Stephenson

Summer's the nicest time of the year
when hearts are young and full of cheer
bird song echoes throughout the land
Their voices chorus a merry band.
Flowers raise their heads with bliss
swooning to the sunshine's kiss
whipped cream clouds go waltzing by
Sailing through a sapphire sky.
Kittens romping in the grass
jump at moths as they wing past
without a worry without a care
Basking in the warm clear air.
Entranced by nature's «I love you.»
In their eyes the message sends
«We hope this summer never ends.»
