Victoria READ Society

For almost 30 years, Victoria READ Society's mission has been to help students of all ages in the Greater Victoria area learn basic academic skills through small classes, individualized help and a supportive caring environment. They believe everyone has the basic right to language and number skills, so their mandate is not only to provide support to children and adults, but also to ensure that everyone recognizes that literacy and numeracy are essential to a healthy community.

For the past 18 years the Victoria READ Society has helped adult students learn academic skills to prepare for further training or employment. Currently there are students who are sponsored by Human Resources and Skills Development Canada, BC Ministry of Human Resources and the Workman's Compensation Board. Depending on their skill levels and goals, some will move on at the end of one course to employment, further academic or job training, while others will return to continue to develop their reading, writing and math skills.

The Victoria READ Society believes their welcoming atmosphere, individualized programs, small groups and professional teachers are the basic ingredients of their success. As students work together, they begin to learn, believe in themselves and ultimately move forward in their lives.

This week, we are launching 9 stories by learners from Victoria, BC.
