Story of the Week

July 22, 1996

This week, we are featuring a poem by Stella Pitruzzela, from the Toronto, Ontario area. Stella has been involved with Frontier College for about ten years as a learner. She is a hard worker, determined, friendly and outgoing. Since the beginning of her literacy classes, she has grown a great deal as a person. With the enhancement of her reading and writing skills, her self-esteem and confidence have greatly improved. Stella always has a smile on her face, despite all the ups and downs she has had in her life.

A Beautiful Summer

by Stella Pitruzella

The trees are beginning to turn green and so is the grass.
The green is the background for the new spring of flowers.
The flowers are in bloom.
Soon the city will be filled with colours
of blues, pinks, yellows, red and white.
And soon we will begin to plant more flowers to
add more colour to our world.
Tulips, violets, roses, daffodils and my favourite,
sunflowers.
In the spring and summer we will watch everything
beginning to wake up again and grow.
We watch the birds flying in the sky and listen
to their joyous song.
When we go for walks we don't need to worry
about being bogged down by our coats and boots.
We are free like the birds in the sky.
When we go for walks we see others enjoying
the sunshine, the colours, the birds, the smiles on
everyone's face and our freedom.
Let's not forget about the summer breeze and
the rain that helps the city change to all this beauty.
Most of all the beautiful rainbow after the rain.
It will be a beautiful summer.

[This poem was taken from Reflections from Inside, a collection of stories written by learners at Frontier College, Toronto,Ontario.]
