Story of the Week

February 23, 1998

Our story this week is a special event, because we are launching a learner's story on the Internet, and you can read her story as well as hear it, with the proper audio program as shown below. Kirsty Shaw, from Nanaimo, British Columbia, wrote this inspiring message.

Kirsty was born in New Zealand. She came to Canada in 1979. In elementary school, she was assessed for a learning disability. In 1996, Kirsty found that her boyfriend, who has just graduated from university, also has a learning disability. That's when she decided to go back to school. She now has more confidence in everything that she does!

My name is Kirsty. I am currently attending Malaspina University College. I am taking English and Math in the ABE program. I am hoping to get my grade 10 so I can go into the Licence Practical Nursing Program by September "98". I am enjoying succeeding in reaching my goals. In high school I hated to do the work especially math, but now I'm addicted to doing work and I don't like taking a break. I enjoy taking care of people especially children and my dream was always to be a nurse. If things work out I hope to work in pediatrics at the hospital {if that's possible}. I'm glad I decided to go back to school. That was the smartest decision I have ever made.
