My name is Danny Haines. I’m from Edmonton, Alberta. Throughout my life, I have been in many near-death situations. And each time I wondered why I was spared. As goofy as it sounds, I know why part of what makes us feel good about ourselves is feeling like we have a purpose for our lives, something that is useful to us.
My involvement with literacy has given me this. I have come a long way since I started in my literacy journey, from travelling to taking calls from senators, meeting with MLA's and MP's. I have gotten my Air-brake ticket, my Fork-lift ticket and my First Aid ticket.
Five years ago I would never have dreamed any of this possible. As I have become more involved in the literacy community, I realize that there are so many adults like me who need help.
I’m still not comfortable talking about myself, but if my story can inspire others to begin their own literacy journey, then it’s all worthwhile.
