The following poem was written by Rhonda Cooper, from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. Rhonda is enrolled in literacy classes at Program Read in Sault Ste. Marie.

Snowy Mornings

by Rhonda Cooper

Why do we have to have snow?
I'd rather wake up
To a day with sunshine and light.

Mornings like this are grey and heavy
Needing only a biting wind
To make it even more miserable..

My heart gets heavy and sad,
Just wanting to go back to bed
And pull the covers over me.

Warmth is what I crave,
Dark and smooth, almost
Like the inside of a pocket.

Or even like black velvet, smooth
And fluffy, deep and flowing,
Just like unsweetened chocolate.

Even so, Spring is coming, coming soon.
It'll be all I need, all I crave, all I want,
And I'll be here, soaking it up,
Fulfilled.
