This week, we are launching a story from the Slave Lake Native Friendship Centre, in Slave Lake, Alberta. The author, Frank Ward, is disabled and gets around with a walker. He wrote the letter below to the Slave Lake Town Council, in order to make them aware of accessibility issues in the town. Frank was instrumental in getting a paved ramp built to get to the bridge from the sidewalk on the main street. He is taking literacy and computer classes at the Slave Lake Native Friendship Centre. Frank attended the Literacy & Learning Symposium 2010 in Edmonton, a conference organized by Community Learning Network and Literacy Alberta on October 27 - 30, 2010.

Dear Mayor and Council
Thank you for putting me on the agenda to attend the city hall meeting. I am using a walker to get around to and from because of the disability I was born with. Walking on the side walk on 6th Ave., coming to the bridge eastward from the lights, just before the end of the sidewalk going to get on the bridge there is a large lip. This lip is almost as high as my wheels on the walker. Coming from the side walk, it is almost impossible for me to get on the bridge. Can you please put a ramp with tar from side walk to the bridge.
Thank You Very Much,
Frank Anthony Ward Jr.
