Here is Tammy's story from Rabbittown Learners' Program, in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador.
The happiest time of my life was when I had Alexander. I was confused because I was not sure that I was going to keep the baby. I did not have a job or my grade twelve. The baby was a big change in our lifestyle. The baby's dad talked me into keeping him. So we had to do some changing very quickly. I decided to stay home with my mom and raise the baby. The baby's dad helped me as much as he could. I was worried about him because he was very sick. I was very strung out between taking care of the baby and making sure that the baby's dad was okay. My mom was a lot of help to me.
When the baby turned eight months old the baby's dad died. Then it was twice as hard because I had the baby to take care of. Also I had the baby's dad's death to deal with. My mom had to give me the help to move on. I could not get over the death for a long time. But I had to be strong for the baby. Sometimes reminders still make me upset. I think it is time to get over the death and get on with my life. So I decided to go back to school and get my grade twelve to give Alexander a better life. Alexander is now four years old and he is very close to me and his nanny.
I am very proud of myself that I am back in school because it will make a better life for me also. After I finish my grade twelve I am hoping to get a good trade so Alexander and I can live comfortably on our own.
