Story of the Week

November 29, 1999

This week, we have a story written by Lilia Anguelova, from Banff, Alberta. Lilia moved to Canada from Bulgaria, without knowing very much English. She first got a job as a housekeeper in Banff. She is now working at a Christmas store, and is taking literacy classes with the Bow Valley Literacy Program, so that she can write to her friends in Italy and the US.

In the Christmas Store

by Lilia Anguelova

Yes, it's true! I am working in this beautiful Spirit of Christmas store, in Banff, where everything is charming. I feel like it is Christmas and I am not tired of it. I like the beauty. I like to touch it. Everyday brings me some joy, with the smell of the candles, the grace of the ornaments, the magic of the angels and Santa Claus. I feel like I am in the kingdom of children's stories and I don't want to leave.

If it is morning, I put ornaments on some of the Christmas trees. The music is quiet and nice. The candles smell so sweet and the bells ring gently. I really feel the spirit of Christmas! I look at the angels. Do they move or do I imagine everything? It doesn't matter. It is important to keep the magic, the magic I need to live.

Sometimes, I don't hear any footsteps. But when I lift my head, I see a smiling child come to me. Her eyes are filled with admiration, and I know why - the charm works! There is nothing better than a child's smile at Christmas and every day.
