The following poem was written by Gillian Shirreff, from Victoria, BC. Gillian is enrolled in literacy classes at Project Literacy Victoria. Gillian was born 1941 in Vancouver. The past was so turbulent that Gillian blocked out the first fifty years of her life. She graduated from high school without knowing how to read or write. Gillian has gotten help from Project Literacy Victoria, the Capital Mental Health Association and interested relatives who spent many tireless hours thinking and praying on her behalf. She succeeded in February 2005, when Crossings Book Club sent her two books she had not ordered. She found she couldn't get her nose out of them and has been a reader ever since. Gillian's gift with words runs in the family and her reading activities has enhanced it.
Candle lowly deep of shade
Be my light when sunlight fades
When the shadows block my view
Let me keep my eyes on you
Guide me candle, guide me on
Guide me ‘til my life has gone
Burn on candle burn on bright
Burn and guide me through the night
Love you candle, love you much
Soft and gentle, mild to touch
