Story of the Week

February 14, 2000

This week, we are launching 8 stories from Prince George, BC and as a special event you can read their stories as well as hear them. The learners are from two programs in Prince George : the Native Friendship Centre as well as College and Career Preparation at the College of New Caledonia.

Paul Budskin is from Faust, Alberta, but he was born in High Prairie, Alberta. Paul is from the Cree Nation of Drift Pile, Alberta. In 1987, he completed Grade 10 in Kinuso, Alberta. He has recently entered an Adult Basic Education program at the Native Friendship Centre in Prince George, BC. Paul believes in equality of all cultures and their beliefs. He believes we can learn and understand each other more if we can respect each others' cultures and beliefs. Paul enjoys meeting all kinds of people and the more people we meet the more we grow, understand, and become educated about each other.

Rose

by Paul Budskin

here is a rose I am looking for
This is not a regular rose
The rose looks like this:
Beautiful with love and acceptance in its stem
This stem has a certain juice flowing through it that
brings forth laughter, friendship and love with a smile
that glows shinier than the bright sun
It will take a long time to find this Rose
I've climbed mountains, walked flat lands, swam the deepest oceans
Now I am thirty years old
I am just finding that certain Rose within me
Now, I will let my stem grow longer
The Rose grows bigger and brighter that I ever felt
So, here's my Rose
It's me, my heart, and here's what I offer -
My Rose so I can help and be with you
My Rose

Your friend - Paul Budskin
