This week, we have a story by a learner from Hinton, Alberta. The author, Dora Cazon, is enrolled in a literacy program at the Hinton Literacy Center. Dora has lived in Hinton for 2½ years. Her interests include journal writing, reading, sewing and camping. Dora sets goals for herself. She wants to finish upgrading and receive high marks in Math, English, Accounting and Typing. Her dream is to become a secretary in the near future.
It was a first time that I had a tutor helping me to learn about math and typing skills. Her name is Betsy. She also encourages me to do my math again and show her my work. I usually have to explain how I got my answer. She explain it well to me about math and I understood her. I usually ask a lot of question if I do not understand about instruction on how to do things. She corrects my work. She help me with work problem on math and she gave me some work to do on work problem. She also help me to learn about my typing skills. She explain about typing with my fingers on the key board and concentrate on my typing. She encouragers me to practice typing and not looked at my fingers when I type. She also suggest not to looked at my key board when I am typing. She is a good listener and give a proper feedback. Sometimes I do not agree with her but we work it out. We work at math until we solved it.
I’m glad to have a person who teach me math and know her math and I have learn a lot from my tutor when I made a lot of mistakes or did not understand how to do my work and she was there to help me out. I have more experience in typing. In typing the sentences and numbers well before and now I’m learning to type the numbers and sentences. I’m trying to be more accurate on my typing. She told me to type and if I made a mistake and keep on typing.
I was typing two minutes. When I first met Marilyn I was nervous. She gave me some paper work to do. I have to learn to fill the application form. She help me with the application forms. She also help me with the math. I felt comforted with Marilyn and Betsy. I felt like I gain a lot in writing and math. Marilyn also gave me a ride to my class. She usually have a small talk with me about how I’m doing at my sessions. I always come up with different ideas and what to do on next subject. I get along with Marilyn and she speak soft voice so I have to listen well when she is speaking to me. She explain everything well about math, typing skills and about filling an application and my sessions with Betsy. I have gain a knowledge in my math and writing and it was improve and my typing skills. I did best at math, filling an application forms, typing skills. I’m able to follow instructions. I improve my skills in math and I able to do my math on my own and I get Betsy to help me out with math.
I could type twenty-five words per minutes. Betsy told me to watch how I place my fingers on the key board. She also encourages me to sit up straight and type. She suggest that I put my foot flat down on the floor and not to moved my wrist or my hands. To sit in a comfortable way. To type with fingers and reach up higher to reach other letters on the key board. She encourages me to practice my typing and tried to not to moved my fingers around when I type and I tried to keep my fingers on the key board when I am typing. Marilyn help me out help me out to plan my career goals.
I have taken a math test for office career training course and also wrote an essay for my test in math. I didn’t get a high marks for my math test and I felt disappointed but Marilyn suggested that I take an general educational development math. I’m glad that I took a math class and did well in math. I got a lot out of math and now I have experience in work problem and working in fractions and decimals and did percent. I have learn to read an instruction on how to follow instruction and how to do my work in math. If I do not understand what I’m suppose to do. I ask Betsy to explain what am I suppose to do in math. I have tried to figure out math and do my math. If I couldn’t do my math and I waited to ask Betsy to help me with math. We both worked at math until we get it right.
I’m learning to take notes when the phone rings at home. I write down the message and phone number which I receive from a phone call. I communicate well with Marilyn and Betsy. I express myself to other people in general or in doctor’s office. I have a good listening skills and communication skills. I have experience and gain a lot of knowledge while I have attend literacy class.
