The following story was written by Ida Hilson, from Haileybury, Ontario. Ida is enrolled in literacy classes at Literacy Council of South Temiskaming.
I went to Hamilton on Wednesday June 16th with Vicki. We checked into our hotel room and then we had dinner. After dinner we looked around at the pool and the weight room. Then we went to our room for the night. The next morning we had breakfast. After breakfast we had to go and register. Then we went to the lobby so that I could wait for my roommate Cheryl. Then Cheryl and I went to our room so that she could unpack her things. After she got registered we went to our first workshop, How to Choose a Book. I found it very interesting knowing all about books. Then it was lunchtime.
After lunch we had another workshop called, Learning, How to Take Charge of Your Future. They were talking about giving you courage to learn and the steps to take. After that workshop we had an AlphaRoute party. I gave name tags to all the learners that were involved in AlphaRoute. We had good time. We all had our pictures taken at the party. Then we had free time and we looked around the mall before dinner.
Friday morning I had another workshop. It was called, How to Use the Internet. It was really interesting. They talked about different ways to use the computer and the internet. That was important to me. In the afternoon the workshop was called, Return to Learning. We talked about goals and the barriers to going back to school. We all must reach our goals in literacy. Friday night Cheryl and I went to see the Geritol Follies. They were really good and funny. Everyone had a few good laughs. The lady was telling lots of jokes.
Saturday morning was our last workshop. It was about Learning Disabilities. We learned how to cope with them. Then we had lunch and the closing ceremonies. I couldn't stay for the whole thing. I had to leave because Larry was waiting for me outside the hotel.
I sure had a good time at the conference. I met lots of new learners who I have been talking to on AlphaRoute.
