This week, we are launching 2 stories from Employment Projects for Women Inc. in Winnipeg, Manitoba. As a special event you can read their stories as well as hear them. These two learners are attending the "Bridges to Employment" program at EPW, which provides Canadian and Foreign born individuals the opportunity to learn English, mathematics, an introduction to computers and employment preparation.
This story was written by Fauzia Sherzoi. Fauzia is presently attending "Bridges to Employment", a community based literacy course offered by Employment Projects for Women Inc. in Winnipeg. Fauzia was a teacher in Afghanistan. Her husband was an Engineer. They had the best life in her country, but unfortunately a war started. They lost their jobs and everything in their life. They went to Pakistan. Fauzia's husband was worried about his life. He died in 1996. His family sponsored Fauzia to Canada. Now she and her children have a good life in Canada.

My Life in Canada

I'm from Afghanistan. I came to Canada on the 30th June, 1997 with my children. I have three children, two daughters and one son. They like Canada. When we came to Canada my children and I didn't speak English at all. But now my children can speak English very well. Sometimes they help me. I took English Courses for two years. Now I think my English is a little better. I'm thankful for the Bridges to Employment women because I learn many things, including computer. I love Canada because study is free for immigrant people. I hope to understand more English and I want to work with people.
